Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance: Now Through June 23

The Wolfsonian–FIU in Miami Beach presents Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance, an exploration of how the Harlem Renaissance portrayed Black culture in the 1920s, 30s and 40s. The exhibit focuses on how artists and writers worked together to create illustrated works that challenged stereotypes and changed perceptions around the world.

Harmony of Heritage: February 3

Step into a world of rhythm at Harmony of Heritage, where creativity, culture and community come together in North Miami Beach for a celebration of Black history. Wander through the gallery as you soak in portraits of iconic Black musicians while the smooth sounds of a live jazz band serenade you in the background. From choral performances to visual exhibits, Harmony of Heritage brings together talented local artists, community leaders and organizations dedicated to preserving and elevating Black history.

Trayvon Martin Annual Peace Walk & Talk: February 3-4

Experience hope and remembrance during the Trayvon Martin Foundation Annual Peace Walk & Peace Talk in honor of Martin’s legacy. Established in 2012 by Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, The Trayvon Martin Foundation supports families devastated by gun violence by providing emotional and financial assistance. Walk arm-in-arm with a community united in peace as voices rise in song and stories during the Peace Walk on Saturday in Miami Gardens. Join the Peace Talk, where speakers, community leaders and families touched by gun violence will discuss hope and solutions for a safer future. The weekend culminates on Sunday with a gala honoring Martin in the ballroom of DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport & Convention Center.

Heritage Fest: African Americans and the Arts: February 4

Celebrate Black History Month at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Downtown Miami with Heritage Fest 2024: African Americans and the Arts. This is the fifth annual edition of this event, which features free events for the whole family. The theme for 2024 is an exploration of the impacts Black artists have had on American music, art and culture. The event runs from 3 to 7 p.m. on the Thomson Plaza for the Arts. There will be some indoor activities as well. Highlights will include performances by The W's featuring Johnny James Dr. J. and Live in Color!, sounds from DJ Cardi and delicious food options.

Black History Celebration in the Park: February 10

Grab your picnic blankets, friends and dancing shoes as you groove to the beat of live music at the City of Homestead’s Black History Celebration in the Park. Play games, trivia and karaoke. Refuel at local food trucks serving global flavors under the sky at Losner Park. Groove to the beat with live music and a DJ, discover unique finds from local shops and enjoy the family fun zone.

Soul Vegan Festival: February 10

Rock your taste buds with plant-based cuisine from Miami’s most talented African American and Caribbean chefs at the 8th annual Soul Vegan Festival. Savor jerk jackfruit, creamy mac and vegan cheese, tropical smoothies and more. Grab your beach chair, head to Lummus Park in South Beach and enjoy this celebration of vegan food.

Black History Gospel Music Brunch & Awards: February 17

Savor a tasty brunch and the resonant sounds of gospel music during the 7th Annual Black History Gospel Music Brunch & Awards at Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens. Gospel music is more than just a genre; it is a way of life that Black people have used for generations to share raw emotions and powerful stories of resilience through rhythms, melodies and choruses.

Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival: February 22-25

Flash your jazz hands and swing to the beat with an impressive lineup of jazz musicians at the 27th annual Melton Mustafa Jazz Festival at Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater in Historic Overtown. From seasoned pros to eager high school and college bands, the festival is a place for musicians of all levels and jazz lovers to connect, learn and soak in live jazz.

Taste of Black Spirits Miami: February 22-25

Enjoy spirits produced by Black-owned companies during Taste of Black Spirits Miami. At various events, attendees can learn about and barrel their own whiskey, participate in an engaging discussion with industry professionals and sample Black-owned spirits such as Black Momma Vodka, IslandJon Vodka and Tom Bullock’s Gin, among many others.

An Evening with Maura Cheeks: February 23

Bookworms, dive into the literary mind of author Maura Cheeks as she discusses her new novel, “Acts of Forgiveness,” during An Evening with Maura Cheeks at Books & Books in Coral Gables. Her novel explores family secrets, second chances and the complex weight of legacies. Cheeks’ work has appeared in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Paris Review and Tin House.

The Greatest Weekend at Historic Hampton House: February 23-25

Get ready to rumble during a three-day celebration of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali at The Greatest Weekend at Historic Hampton House in Brownsville. Held on the 60th anniversary of Ali’s famous victory over Sonny Liston in Miami Beach for the world heavyweight championship, the event will feature ringside discussions, music and food trucks.

Muhammad Ali Historical Timeline: February 23 - April 1

The Washington Avenue BID is collaborating with HistoryMiami Museum on an exhibit exploring the life, career and lasting legacy of a sports and cultural icon with the Muhammad Ali Historical Timeline at 555 Washington Avenue in Miami Beach. Washington Avenue played a significant role in Ali’s career. He trained at the 5th Street Gym at the corner of Washington Avenue, and on February 25, 1964 (when he was still known as Cassius Clay) he defeated Sonny Liston at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Washington Avenue. There will be a special celebration of the 60th anniversary of this landmark fight from February 23-25, including an all-star tribute and a gala.
