World Water Day: Microplastics Marine Debris Clean-up
Mar 15, 2025
Starting: 9:30 AM
Discover the hidden impact of microscopic plastic pollution while making a tangible difference in your local marine environment. World Water Day: Microplastics Marine Debris Clean-up will take place on Saturday, March 15 at Crandon Park, bringing together environmental advocates and community members for a purpose-driven morning of conservation action.
This collaborative event, hosted by Miami Waterkeeper, Debris Free Oceans, PIRG and Environment Florida, focuses on removing microplastics—plastic fragments smaller than 5mm—that pose significant threats to marine ecosystems and wildlife. Participants will gain valuable knowledge about microplastic pollution while actively contributing to coastal restoration efforts.
The organizing partners bring substantial environmental expertise to the initiative. Environment Florida advocates for clean air, water and energy through research and grassroots mobilization. PIRG functions as a public interest watchdog addressing health and environmental challenges. Debris Free Oceans, a Miami-based nonprofit established in 2014, has engaged over 12,000 volunteers who have collected more than 64,000 pounds of trash, while also educating 14,000 students and preventing the use of over 2 million single-use plastic items.
Volunteers should arrive at 9:30 a.m., with registration opening 30 minutes prior. Participants should bring a refillable water bottle, wear closed-toe shoes and consider long sleeves and pants for protection. Hats, sunscreen and personal gloves are recommended, though gloves will be provided if needed. Community service hours are available for participants.
