From: Noon to 1:00 PM
Step back into the roaring 1920s with a lively dance class teaching the basics of the Charleston. Led by four-time World Champion Yuval Hod and Juls Slavikas, this free session will be held at the Jazz Age Stage in Lummus Park at 12th and Ocean Drive, as part of the Miami Design Preservation League’s Art Deco Weekend event lineup. A partner is required to participate.
The Charleston, named after Charleston, South Carolina, became a defining dance of the 1920s, fueled by James P. Johnson’s hit song “The Charleston” from the Broadway show Runnin’ Wild. Known as “the father of swing,” the dance played a pivotal role in the evolution of styles like the Lindy Hop. This class offers an engaging introduction to one of the most iconic dances of the Jazz Age.
