Fri-Mon: 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM | Thu: 11:00 AM - 9:00 PM
Explore the multifaceted world of Xicanx art at the Pérez Art Museum Miami's exhibition, Xican-a.o.x. Body, on display from June 13, 2024, to February 16, 2025. This major showcase, the first of its kind, brings together over 70 artists and collectives whose work centers on the human body as a site of political expression, artistic exploration and decolonization. Xican-a.o.x. Body draws from the legacy of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, while also embracing contemporary artists who identify in diverse ways, including Mexican American, Chicana/o, Xicanx, Indigenous, Latinx, Black, Brown and Queer.
The exhibition is inspired by the concept of the Brown Commons, articulated by writer José Esteban Muñoz, which explores the experiences of those existing within an "in-betweenness." Additionally, it incorporates Xicanisma, a term coined by writer and poet Anna Castillo to define a culturally specific form of Chicana feminism. VIsitors will encounter a diverse range of artistic mediums, including poetry, ceramics, painting, photography, sculpture, film, performance, and drawings—spanning from the late 1960s to the present.
