Take a deep dive into banned books that have profoundly shaped African American history at On the Ban Wagon: The Power of the Pen, a year-long exhibition hosted at the historic Dana A. Dorsey House. The exhibition opens on Friday, February 23 with a community reading of David Walker's Appeal, a poignant literary work that instills pride and hope within the black community. As a challenge to colonization, Walker's Appeal asserts that America belongs to all who contributed to its formation. The reading, staged as a theatrical performance and showcasing selected excerpts, will be skillfully delivered by community members.
Artists featured in the exhibition include Anthony 'Lavish' Lumpkin, Azizi DeSouza, Godwin Ferrier, Inna Malostovker, Nate Dee, Nica Sweet, Oscar Esteban Martinez and Tierra Armstrong.
On display by appointment only, the exhibit runs through the end of the year at the D.A. Dorsey House. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. On the Ban Wagon is sponsored in part by Black Archives, MUCE, CRA, Commissioner Christine King, Miami-Dade County, Keon Hardemon and the GMCVB
