El Espacio 23, founded by philanthropist and art collector Jorge M. Pérez in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, unveils Mirror of the Mind: Figuration in the Jorge M. Pérez Collection, its fifth major exhibition. On view from November 7, 2024, to August 16, 2025, this extensive showcase, co-curated by Patricia M. Hanna and Anelys Alvarez, features 150 works from over 120 artists, exploring figuration and portraiture as tools to navigate the complexities of the human condition. Inspired by recent additions to the Pérez Collection, including works by Shirin Neshat, Julio Galan and Anselm Kiefer, Mirror of the Mind presents a multi-faceted dive into perception, trauma, introspection, belonging and the body’s impact on identity. Pérez, reflecting on EE23’s five-year milestone, describes the exhibition as a space for the community to experience art’s transformative impact and engage in dialogues on shared human experiences.
The exhibition’s themes span six distinct sections. Perception considers how images influence self and societal views, featuring artists like Eduardo Arroyo, Meleko Mokgosi and Nancy Spero. Trauma addresses the emotional impacts of historical and intergenerational pain, with works by Shirin Neshat, A. R. Penck and Ayana V. Jackson. Introspection delves into moments of solitude, with pieces from Cindy Sherman, La Chola Poblete, and Alice Neel. Belonging celebrates community and collective identity, showcasing Deana Lawson, Jared McGriff and others. Healing explores resilience and social agency, with works by Carrie Mae Weems and Yael Bartana. Finally, Flesh focuses on the body’s physicality and its ties to identity, gender and emotion, with contributions from Marta Minujín and Vera Chávez Barcellos.
In addition to the exhibit, EE23 will publish a catalog featuring essays by prominent arts scholars, including Odette Casamayor-Cisneros and Dr. Tatiana Flores. EE23’s residency program also welcomes new artists such as Pamela Castro and Vinicius Gerheim during the exhibition’s run, further supporting South Florida’s arts community.
Admission to EE23 is free, and walk-ins are welcome from Thursday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
