Chamber Music: McDermott, Messiaen and Mozart
Dec 22, 2024
Starting: 2:00 PM
On Sunday, December 22, the New World Symphony, presents a powerful chamber music performance titled Chamber Music: McDermott, Messiaen, and Mozart. Under the direction of Leonidas Kavakos and Molly Turner, this concert explores themes of inspiration and reflection through a diverse program.
The performance opens with The King in Yellow by Melody Eötvös, a piece influenced by the psychological horror novel of the same name. Mozart’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major, a work the composer himself regarded as one of his finest, offers contrasting lightness and elegance. The program culminates with Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time, composed during his imprisonment in a WWII prisoner-of-war camp. This profound work, inspired by the Book of Revelations, is known for its ethereal beauty and deep spiritual resonance.
This concert is part of Resonance of Remembrance, a season-long series marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the Holocaust.
