A Night at The Sir John's (Knight Beat)
Feb 27, 2025
From: 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Journey through a pivotal chapter of Miami's musical heritage with an evening celebrating the legacy of Sir John's Knight Beat. A Night at The Sir John's comes to the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center on Thursday, February 27 from 7 to 9 PM, featuring the Idyllic Funk Band, the Center's Artists in Residence. The performance pays tribute to this historic venue, once a vital stop on the Chitlin' Circuit and listed in The Green Book as an essential destination for African American travelers. Under its alternate name, The Lord Calvert, the club played a significant role in Miami's Black cultural landscape during the Jim Crow era. The Idyllic Funk Band recreates the jazz standards that once filled this legendary space, offering a musical window into an era when venues along the Chitlin' Circuit fostered the development of jazz, blues, soul and R&B. This performance connects audiences to a time when music served not only as entertainment but as a powerful expression of Black identity and community resilience.
